HUANGSHAN
THE ANTIDOTE TO THE GLITZ
OF CHINA'S MEGA CITIES

Between the heaven and the earth lies Mount Huangshan. Often described as the “loveliest mountain of China”, a legend from the Tang Dynasty dated from the year 747 describes the mountain as the place of discovery of the long-sought elixir of immortality. The imposing scenery has inflamed some of the most outstanding creations of Chinese painting and poetry, as well as temple architecture. During the Ming Dynasty, this landscape inspired the Shanshui (“Mountain and Water”) school of painting.

Today, it still rewards the jaded traveller with an unearthly picturesque calm and holds the same fascination for legions of poets, painters and photographers who come on pilgrimage to the site, renowned for the many granite peaks emerging out of a sea of clouds formed almost 100 million years ago. Reaching 990 meters, Huangshan is a UNESCO Heritage site located in Anhui province. It is here that MAD Architects’ vision of the ‘Huangshan Mountain Village’ led by Ma Yansong is conceived and created in its most elegant form.

In the words of Ma Yansong, “The impression we have of Taiping Lake at Huangshan is mesmerising and ever-changing. Each visit to this site portrays a different view, a different impression. It is mysterious, like an enchanting ancient Shanshui painting.” Given its majestic location and abundant ecosystem, Taiping Lake is where adventurous tourists often find themselves embarking on a life-changing pilgrimage. Composed in deference to the local topography, each of the buildings are diverse in height and appearance, and have been conceived to ensure that the original mountain levels are maintained. Organised in a link configuration across the southern slope of Taiping Lake, the dynamic relationship that is created among the ten buildings establishes a new type of village landscape: one where architecture becomes nature, and nature dissolves into architecture.

The apartments that comprise Huangshan Mountain Village have all been envisioned as quiet retreats. Instinctively growing out of the mountainous landscape, the serene design sensibility of the village is reflected in its natural setting. Each one boasts an expansive balcony whose organic lines respond to the topographic contours of the immediate terrain.

Overlooking the tea fields nearby, each apartment transitions onto an expansive balcony, giving residents the feeling that they are not just observers of the scenery that surrounds, but they are immersed within it - creating a dialogue with the mountains, lake, and sky. Below, winding pathways naturally meander through the trees and between the architecture, offering access to the treasured site. The unparalleled lifestyle offered here also includes access to the award winning golf course. The Hidden Tiger Golf course, designed by The Gary Player, was named one of China’s best new courses based on 8 factors: shot value, playability, resistance to scoring, design variety, memorability, aesthetics, conditioning and ambience.
